Q: Does This Sound Like Cancer [Any Doctors or Experienced People?]?
My mom had breast cancer 3 years ago. There was a scare a few months ago with a lump that turned out to be cyst, thank God. But now, she found a lump in her chest and her legs are very very very sore. She has been working out a few times a week just to let you know. She has been on Timoxifin or w/e and other medication. She has arranged a doctor’s appointment for next week with her cancer doctor. Could these all be cysts? Are there any other things that this could be other than cancer? What are the chances that this could be cancer? If you honestly have no experience or you aren’t a doctor, please don’t put in your 2 cents.
I will be refreshing this a lot and willing to answer questions you have that may help to solidify an answer. Please help.
@KikinJoe…are you serious? Are you really serious? My mother already survived cancer once, we’ve been through this before jack ass. These are exactly the kind of stupid answers I was trying to avoid.
A: A challenging aspect of cancer is that even successfully treated patients must remain vigilant. You Mom is doing all of the right things by taking her hormone receptor med (Tamoxifen) and actively self-examining for tissue irregularities.
It is very possible that the lump is nonmalignant tissue, especially in light of her discovery of a cyst just a few months ago. It sounds like she has already made a connection between her leg pain and physical exercise, so I wouldn’t be too concerned about that.
Seeing her doctor and undertaking whatever tests are ordered will be her next best steps. Worrying and waiting for results are always difficult, so do your best to help her keep upbeat. She’ll get through this rough patch in the road with your help.
Q: Breast Buds??? Please help!!!!!?
I think I have breast buds but im not sure if it could be something else like a cyst or maybe even like breast cancer or something so how would i know?? And if they were breast buds how long does it take for them to go away because ive had them for quite a while now. Im kinda worried so any answers to my question would be great.
thanks
oh yeah and by the way i just recently turned 13 and i got them when i was 12
A: They’re buds, just the start of your boobies hun! If you have the ‘buds’ or ‘lumps’ in both breasts and they feel the same on both sides, it probably isn’t a cyst or cancer. You are young, you are developing so they’re just buds. If I remember correctly, the buds kind of just stay hard until you start growing more breast tissue (the fat mammary) to surround it. Once that happens the hard bud part disappears and you forget about it. Not to worry, you are going to be ok. If you are worried, don’t be scared to ask to see a doctor to just ease your mind. But it’s normal, and it’s just apart of becoming a woman.
[I'll ask my 12yr old sister in law, sorry it's been awhile since I've been your age, but I think that is what she is complaining about nowadays. You can buy yourself a trainer bra, she has one they're super cute, & it helps mask the awkward growing stage a little bit also.]
I hope this helps, best of luck to you hun!
Q: Lump in breast??
Ten years ago I discovered a lump in my left breast. After many sleepless nights, lots of tears, and many, many tests, it turned out to be a benign cyst. I was 31 at the time. Since then, I have yearly mammograms. Every year, I dread going. Every year, so far, I’ve been lucky. On Monday I had my mammogram, which had been rescheduled from 2 weeks ago. I canceled my original appointment because I was so afraid that they’d find something. I always thought it was foolish when women would be afraid to go because of fear of what would be found, and then I did it myself. I just kept feeling like something was going to be wrong this time. After the test, they told me everything looked good, and I was able to “breathe” again-I was so relieved that my feelings were wrong! Well, I just got a phone call from the hospital saying they found a lump and I need more tests. My grandmother died of breast cancer. Please, I need some encouraging words from strong women right now-I’m so scared.
Thanks so much ladies – just needed some “rallying” so I don’t spiral down, if you know what I mean. I have no one to talk to. I really, really appreciate your kind words, your thoughts and your prayers. Thanks again! Blessings to you all!!!
A: Honey the only thing I can tell you is that you did the right thing you’ve been checking all along, so it is likely that if it is cancerous you caught it in time. As for courage from all the strong ladies, look to yourself you went through all of this and survived, so I say lets go through it together (We’ll call it round two) oh by the way I hope you have decided like I have that it’s going to end with a complete knockout. the enemy won’t know what hit em.
I had alot of family members who died of cancer related stuff but the thing of it all is that most of them could have prevented if they just went to their doctors in time, you did go so we’ll take it from there. P.S. i’m adding you to my contact list hope you do the same. If ever you need to talk or for somebody to just listen or somebody to share your feelings with contact me. fire and ice. If you want we can go through it together. see u friend. My offer still stands.
Q: Could this be cancer…. i’m only 18!?
hey everyone….
ok so i dont want to sound crazy or anythin…. but i really am scared! So i turned 18 about 12 days ago and someday i discovered a lump in my breast… except its wierd… its smallish but flat, not really big and bulky. Ive had a look at every website and i have none of the symptoms mentioned except for this lump, and it isnt even sore. Also there is no history of breast cancer in my family… i am really worried because i dont want it to be cancer, could it maybe be a cyst?
please please help me… i am stressed about it like you cannot believe!
A: it is not cancer. it is probably not even a cyst it sounds more like
soft tissue that is a normal part of breast tissue. feel around your breasts and see if you can find something similar I bet you can. I also bet that it is hormonal and the next time you have your period it will disappear. Lots of women have what is called lumpy breasts and these lumps and bumps come and go with their periods starting and
ending. If you are really freaked go to a doctor.
Q: abnormal mammogram but not found on ultrasound?
My mom had a mammogram done and it came back with two abnormal spots, one in each breast. She had the ultrasound done today and the doctor was unable to find either of the spots. They are going to order an MRI for her. Has anyone else had this before and what was the outcome? She has had an abnormal test before eight years ago and it was just a cyst, however that one was seen on ultrasound. Both her sisters have/had breast cancer. (She just turned 54 yesterday)
A: Sure, this kind of thing is common. It’s almost certainly nothing. But docs need to follow up and check to make sure everything is OK.
Q: Newly found hard lump on breast?
Let me just start off by saying both breast cancer and lung cancer run in my family history. My grandma has had bread cancer, and her parents had both died of cancer. And so on…
So I have been tanning because it is almost November and I feel that I look better tan. Don’t we all?
On Wednesday I had gotten out of the tanning bed and noticed that my left boob was having a weird pain, and when I went to “rub” it, I felt a really hard lump. It scared the sh*t out of me, because like I said, cancer runs in my family. Fast forward two days, the lump is still there, not as hard and seems to be moving from the top left clockwise.
For further information the lump isn’t as hard now and I am just getting over having my period as well.
My mom and others say it might be fibrocystic or a cyst.
I am going to planned parenthood today to get it checked out, but I’m wondering if anybody has experienced this and it turned out to just be a normal thing many women go through. I am 19 and I don’t normally get that sore of boobs and I’ve never had a lump that I know of.
A: i would check and see with your doctor. you never know, but its probably just a cyst or something. IF it is cancer, then at least you caught it right when it started and it would be treatable. dont worry! everything will be okay and dont freak out. i assume it is just a cyst, i had one right under my armpit, and i kinda moved a bit and got softer and then got hard again……. it was just a cyst and all they had to do was break the skin and take it out…. but they put you to sleep so it wont hurt while they do it. it will be sore until like 3 days afterward but you will survive!
best of luck
Kayla
Q: What can I possibly have on my breast?
Well I started noticing a lump on my left breast I didn’t pay much mind to it I thought it was something pop-able but it turned out to blood coming out I left it alone &; it didn’t grow back but i have an ugly scar now. Few days later I noticed it again on my right breast this time a little bigger I told my mom &; she said its probably because of the heat. I decided to pop it because lately I been looking at a lot of cyst home videos &; I thought it was something like that so I did the procedure but mainly blood came out. It was flat for a few days but this time it grew back bigger &; it hurts a little. Its only the lump that hurts if I touch it or mess with it, if I like put pressure to it blood rushes to the top looking like a huge black head. I told my mom again she’s taking me to the doctor when she has off. My breast &; nipples are normal to me they don’t hurt or anything I’m not to sure if it could be something like breast cancer? I’ve read about it &; i really don’t have any of those symptoms.By the way the lump looks extremely ugly. I really want to know what it is any ideas?
A: It’s not breast cancer. But it could be an infection that you need antibiotics to fix. It sounds like a skin boil. Apply moist heat to the place several times a day, and it should drain and heal faster.
Q: Hypocondriacs, how do you keep from driving yourself and your Dr. crazy?
I have always been a hypochondriac, but recently it has gotten worse. Aches and pains that i have had before are driving me crazy. I have convinced myself that I have breast cancer because of pain under my armpit that I have had on and off for about a week. Last week I was convinced I had ovarian cancer that turned out to be a large cyst, but since I found out what that was, the pain and discomfort has gone away. I haven’t had a breakdown like this in a long, long time (about 15 years). I feel like i am going crazy and taking my Dr. with me.
A: The only thing I can figure out is that you have let FEAR take control of your life.
YOU will make yourself sick with the stress of thinking your constantly sick, and in the end YOU will bring on a legitimet illness and it won’t be anyones fault but your own.
I also believe that you have a sympathetic heart for others and then when you hear of someone with an sickness, you may take on their symptoms.
Then if that person recovers properly, you too recover.
If you can find a new way of directing all of this ENERGY in to POSITIVE directives and thoughts, you would be able to accomplish so much in your life.
First of all, I think you need to take a serious look into YOUR HEART… do you love yourself? are you happy with your life? do you TRUST that God is in control?
Give yourself a break and let your mind and body feel some peace and happiness.
Let me ask you a question…
Why worry??? Where does it get you??? Does it make you happy or sad??? Do you want to have peace and happiness???
You know what to do to put an end to this raging storm… Step out by faith and give it a try, you’ll be amazed how easy it will be for you and how wonderful you’ll feel…..
I did have Ovarian Cancer and never knew it.. I was given one year to live and it’s been two years..
I now know that I’m in control of nothing and that I could be gone in the blink of an eye.
I appreciate the small things in life now and I have put all of my hope and trust in God.
I’ve learned to let him do all the worrying for me and I’ve given him all the storms that come my way.
Life is good now and I’m blessed…
My prayers are with you…….
Q: Am I too young for a mammogram?
My mom has breast cancer, my aunt had breast cancer, my Grandma has precancerous cyst’s/tissue. My breast’s are huge and very dense, as proven from an earlier mammogram. I am 25 years old, and my doctor sent me to the breast center for a mammogram. They turned me away, and actually humiliated me in the process.
Stating, that my aunt has to genial connection to my breast’s, I am to come back 10 years before the age my mom was diagnosed at, and that I should have no concern for breast cancer for awhile.
WTF is that about? My doctor sent me there, I am at high-risk for breast cancer, my family history, my dense and painful breast’s, my 7 years on birth control. I am so humiliated and insulted!
You have to be preventative, and after learning my lesson the hard way. What I thought was just an irregular spot on my forehead, ended up being basal cell carcinoma, SKIN CANCER. Of course, I’m going to be careful with my health! I can’t take another life shocker!!!!
My doctor talked to one of the head doctors at the breast center/hospital, and they said send her back with the coding for high-risk patient. I can’t do it. Infact, I feel stupid for ever going at all. I want to forget about it
But, your words are making me feel alittle better! Thanks!
A: The medical center owes you an apology! I too have a history of breast cancer in my family. My sister was diagnosed 16 years ago when she was in her mid 30’s my aunt has had it and I have had it. It is not unheard of for women in their 20’s to get it. You are right to be proactive about your health, however because as you mention that you have dense breasts, it might be prudent to ask your dr. to amend your referral to include ultrasound or MRI.
Q: regarding Jade Goody, what is so special about her that she gets all this?
publicity? she is not the only one who is dying of cancer in the world, what makes her so popular? so what she was on big brother, woopie do DA day. My aunt is close to death now with breast cancer and she is not getting any publicity. I am sad for my aunt. My mothers sister. My breast lump ended up turning out to be a cyst but I still have to have them yearly. anyway why is Jade Goody showing of her death. that is nothing to be proud of, death should be a personal thing not to be advertised all over tv and the papers. s h i t. why is she doing this?
thank you as ever that is very kind of you God bless you. Yes midnight and lo mo I do not understand the british government. I am glad there is smears as I would have died from cervical cancer myself. I had CIN2 in 2000 and had lazer in early 2001 and it has not come back since. phew. but they still say regular smears every year for me. I had em
broken and now fixed your post was touching, I was in tears when I read that. The media said her hubby was 21 not 31. weird. I do not know where she has gone but I hope and pray God had mercy on her. God bless you
A: I felt something very similar to what you’re describing when my Mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer the same time as Patrick Swazye. Why is he getting all of this attention? Why is he getting all of this support? Why is my Mom, who is just as amazing and wonderful and has contributed to the world not getting her accolades?
It’s frustrating and aggravating and unfair. A lot like life is. It’s not fair that your Aunt has cancer and is dying. It’s not fair that my Mom had cancer and did die. No fanfare, no fuss, no time in the limelight.
It’s us who know how amazing they are. How strong and brave they are. And how incredibly lucky that we’ve had them in our lives. They are superstars, even if it’s only the family that knows this.
Death is a lot of things to a lot of people. We all go through it at some point. I can only speak for myself, but maybe I was jealous of Mr. Swazye for getting all of the attention that I felt my Mom deserved but never got. I wanted to whole world to know how awesome she was so she could have the support of everyone in the world like he (and Ms. Goody) does.
Some people don’t have the luxury of a personal and private death. That is unfortunate. I’m grateful that my Mom wasn’t some celebrity that had to have cameras in her face clear up to the end. As her daughter, I wouldn’t want to have the whole world look upon me with sympathy at such a personal time.
I admire what Ms. Goody is doing by bringing to light such a tragic situation and hopefully it will change the way people look at cancer and maybe even raise money as well as awareness.
Life isn’t easy. Death is hard for those left behind. Strength and courage is what you have for being there for your Aunt and your Mother during this difficult and trying time.
Be good to each other. Love each other. Life is to short to worry about what other people do or say.
My thoughts to you and your family.
Q: having some problems in my marriage, should we see a marriage counselor?
my husband and i have been married for almost 3 yrs 2 months shy of 3yrs, after our first year of marriage, we started having little problems, with finacial issues, when we first meet i was living in florida he was stationed in gulfport, he moved me from fl to ms and shortly married about a month for dating, we both love each other he always saying he loves me, but ever since he can back from iraq things have changed he started flirty with the girl who he know from A school, i have came face to face with him and asked if he was cheating he told he no that i was over reacting and that he loved me to much to do that, well shortly after that we started having money problems and i guess he had enough and several times suggested a divorce or seperation, but we both talked it over and i got a job, and 2 weeks later he deployed agian to Guam, shortly after he left, i got sick, first the doc thought i had a tumor on my breast turned out to be a cyst, then soon after that i found out i had cervical cancer i had quit my job cause i wasn’t for sure what was going to happen, its been 7 months since i’ve seen him and he coems home in a week and half, and now we are back to the finacial problems agian he hasn’t said divorce yet, but he’s just saying i need to fix the problems and i dunno how to fix it,, i think we may half to sit down and talk when he comes home and i am thinking we may need to either see a marriage counsiler or seperate for lil while longer? we was 22 when we married and we are 24 now.. i love him to death, and i don’t want to lose the best thing in my life he has changed my whole entire life i’d stopped drinking parting doing drugs dropped just about all my old friends….
A: americus l, Here’s a list of marriage counselors in Florida that can help. http://www.findingamarriagecounselor.com/Florida-Marriage-Counselors.html
Q: BRCA 1 & 2 and optional ovarian surgery?
I was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 years ago when I was 29 years old. I am ER+ and Her2 +. I had bilateral mastectomy, the right side as prevention. My dr wrote to my insurance company asking them to approve the BRCA tests. They turned me down. Twice. I have not had them done myself since they cost about $3000.
I am supposed to have my ovaries out next week, by my own request, but my onc told me this past week that he doesn’t agree with my decision. I am currently in a study where my ovaries are shut down each month, for another 2+ years. He is worried about the long term effects of being in menopause at my age. I am worried about ovarian cancer as I am not sure if I have the BRCA mutation or not. If I have it, I have read that there is a 16-60% chance of getting ovarian cancer.
As a side note, I had an ovarian cyst rupture, which in itself is odd since less than 2% of women in menopause have ovarian cysts.
Has anyone else been in this situation? I don’t know what to do.
For the one who thinks that it doesn’t believe it costs that much for the test, I have found independent labs who charge just under $3000. I suppose it could have changed in the 3 years when I last checked it. I do know it is very expensive. And it was my choice to have the preventative mastectomy. I was 29 with 2 young kids and was willing to do whatever I needed to. That surgery was not forced on me, and unless you have been in the position, I do not think you can tell me what you would or would not have done.
A: Do you have any other family history of breast or ovarian cancer? That would affect your risk of carrying a BRCA mutation. Have you thought about seeing a genetic counselor. They will do a complete family history and then they can use special models to calculate your risk of carrying this mutation. This may give you a better idea of what your risk is. If I were you I would have my ovaries out. If you do have the mutation your risk for ovarian cancer quite high. Ovarian cancer is sneaky (we do not have a good way to diagnose it early, produces vague symptoms) and is usually diagnosed at a late stage when we do not have good treatments for long term survival. You will be menopausal and since you are ER+ you will not be able to have hormone replacement but there are some non-hormonal meds to help with your symptoms. (ask about effexor). Trust me, I have had several patients who had breast cancer at a young age, did not know if they had a BRCA mutation, had bilateral mastectomies and developed ovarian cancer down the road because no one addressed their ovaries. I think if you were brave enough to proceed with mastectomy I would be on the safe side and protect yourself with the removal of the ovaries. I commend your initiative and courage.
Q: Should I get a double Mastectomy?
Hello. I am a very young adult (in my early 20’s) and keep getting lumps in my breast and having them excised. They are like cysts but they are random spots of scar tissue and all of them have been non-cancerous (thank goodness). I have another one and am getting really sick of having these lumps all the time and having to get them removed and am considering a double mastectomy. I know it sounds drastic but the doctor said they have a 5% chance of turning into a soft tissue cancer which could also escalate into breast cancer if they are left untreated. This really worries me! Should I leave my breasts alone or should I get them removed to reduce my chance of getting breast cancer? Please help and try and be sensitive to my situation. Thank you!
DAVE – It’s what I was told was an option! But I definately do not want to because of how it will effect my future. A lot of people get double masectomies after genetic testing if it has been proven to run in their families to ensure they do not get it. I am not superficial and I believe that beauty is on the inside and yes, breasts are beautiful but they do not make a woman beautiful. I’m glad you support your wife because it is such a hard decision to make. Considering cancer is a possible alternative I would rather lose my breasts than go through that as I volunteer with a society that raises money for Cancer Reasearch I see what some of the women have had to go through and they said that if they knew they would get them removed. Like I said – be sensitive to my situation and stop being so melo-dramatic.
A: I think you need an opinion from another doctor. What you are saying doesn’t make sense. Why in the world would your doctor recommend having this done multiple times? What are these growths exactly? They cannot be cysts and scar tissue. You are too young for mammograms, are they using MRI as they have a lot of false positives? A soft tissue cancer cannot turn into a breast cancer. I can’t think of anything that has a 5% chance of developing into a sarcoma and sarcoma of the breast is rare. What is your diagnosis? No doctor is going to do a bilateral mastectomy without a sound medical reason to do so.
Q: weird question about brest, lol?
ok, so like for going on 2 weeks, my breast have been really sore like crzy! they ich alot. since i was born, one nipple alwayz turned inward, but the other one recently turned inward to, but i’m not really worried about the nipples, jus the iching and soreness.
also, i think i may feel a bunch of “mini/tiny” lumps, i’m guess cyst….i have cystic ovaries, so i’m sure i have them in my breast too. lol, but towards the middle of each boob, i feel wat feels like a weirdly shaped sack or lump and its about the size of a half of bar of soap, i was checking to c if i cud have lumps when i found them both and it moves aroud like from the one side of the boob to another and there’s a littler one to that’s like the size of a quarter…so yea, i’m so confused. and they are gettin bigger everyday for the last 2 or 3 days, like i dnt kno, they could be swelling and they are starting to feel tight, so i’m so confused and puzzled. i’m only 15 and i keep doubting i cud have breast cancer!
o, wow, jus realized i spelled breast wrong, lol…….sorry. lol
also, i told my mom about the soreness and she knows about the inward nipples, but i keep forgetting to tell her about everything else, she said she would take me to the doctor when she figured out where to take me…..lol. pls giv me ur suggestions pls, on wat u think is wrong! thanks everyone!
A: Definitely go to a doctor and get this checked out just to be safe!
I’m so sorry that you are going through this!
Q: I’m scared–what is going on????!!!?
my mom had her yearly breast and cervical cancer check ups. they found something from her mammogram but it just turned out to be a cyst. They checked cervical screening and said there was something abnormal. They took a biopsy of the cervical tissue to see if it would produce cancerous cells.
I’ve heard that this is usually just precautionary measures and that a lot of women have to be rechecked the first time they get a screening. My aunt had to go back for tests over three times but in the end, results were normal. The lab results are coming back in three months and I’m scared out of my mind. I’m worried but should i be worried WORRIED? is it normal to do multiple tests?
A: Honestly, don’t worry. Many women do have “irregular” cells that show up on a pap smear. They get re-checked a couple of times….depending on test results, they do a biopsy. 9 times out of 10, the results are fine. If there is cause for concern, they would have her come back for “cryosurgery” which is where they “freeze” off the tissue that has the bad cells on it.
This is one really important reason for girls to get the Guardasil shot. It protects you from HPV, which is the leading cause of abnormal cells (that lead to cervical cancer). Even if you are not sexually active now, one day you will be….and many men carry the HPV virus and never know it. So, statistically, you could be a virgin until you are married, you and your husband be completely faithful and you could STILL get HPV.
Back to your mom….please put your mind at ease. It sounds like she has regular screenings and because of that, any treatment necessary will be caught early….your mom will be fine.
